Oscar Charles “Sonny” Gottschalt (82), of Port Lavaca, passed away on April 11th, 2022 in Victoria, Texas. Oscar was born in Port Lavaca, Texas to Oscar Frank Gottschalt and Agnes Schroeder Gottschalt on June 6th, 1939. He went to school at Calhoun High School and attended Victoria Junior College. He worked as a self-employed businessman selling cars and portable buildings, providing a wrecker service, and an auto/body shop for Sonny’s for over 50 years. He served in the Army Reserves. He was involved in the volunteer fire department, VFW and the Chamber of Commerce. Over his long career as a representative for General Shelters, he received numerous sales awards. He was very proud of the fact that he once delivered a portable building to the former Head Coach of the Houston Oilers, Bum Phillips. He was a car and truck enthusiast and loved going to car auctions to look and bid, but rarely bought a vehicle for himself. He had a pilot’s license and at one time owned a plane. He loved to go floundering and had his flat-bottom set up just the way he wanted it. He loved to play dominoes at the Bayview and entertain friends at the shop. He was a man of many gifts and talents and will be missed.
