68th Class Reunion

Our 68th class reunion has now come and gone, and those who attended had a wonderful time reconnecting and reminiscing. Although attendance was lower than we had hoped, we were grateful to have twelve classmates present, along with guests for a total of twenty-five in attendance.

Unfortunately, we received very distressing news that Bernice (Malchar) Mobley was seriously injured in a car accident while traveling to the reunion. Another driver ran a red light, striking her vehicle and totaling it. Bernice was taken to a hospital in Victoria with a ruptured spleen and five broken ribs. She faces a long and painful recovery, and we ask that everyone keep her in their thoughts and prayers.

Several classmates were unable to attend and sent their regrets:

  • Morris recently suffered a minor stroke and was advised not to travel.
  • Carol Jean broke her hip a few months ago and is still recovering.
  • Roy had been exposed to COVID and didn’t want to risk spreading it.
  • Walter has experienced health issues and had hoped his daughter could bring him, but plans fell through.
  • Hallie Mae is preparing for upcoming back surgery.
  • Phyllis and Kenneth are both dealing with health challenges as well.

On Friday evening, October 3rd, a total of twelve classmates and guests gathered for dinner at Bayside Seafood Restaurant.

The reunion itself was held the following day, Saturday, October 4th, at The Pantry, where we enjoyed good food, conversation, and plenty of laughter.

Paula led us in singing the CHS Alma Mater and Fight Song, followed by Bobby Joe, who shared highlights from an interview conducted years ago with the seven Black students who joined the Class of 1956 during integration. Hearing their reflections as adults on that time was both meaningful and enlightening.

Bobby Joe also handed out notepads to each table and quizzed everyone with trivia questions from 1957, which sparked some lively and nostalgic conversations. It was a fun and memorable time for all who attended.
